AyurVeda FAQs

Q. “What is AyurVeda?”

A. It is a 5,000 year old system of health that focuses first on understanding the uniqueness of each individual. Then AyurVeda uses diet, lifestyle, routine and other treatment modalities to create health. Because it is a natural system of health, there are no dangerous or lingering side effects commonly found with conventional medicines and treatments.

Q. “How do I find out about my body type?”

A. There are several ways to determine body type: visual diagnosis, pulse diagnosis and self questionnaire. For symptom specific health concerns, a consultation with a trained Maharishi Ayurvedic practitioner is essential.

Q.“What is the value of knowing my body type?”

A. Knowing your body type is the basis for ideal routine, lifestyle and diet. It is one of the key factors in establishing perfect health.

Q. “How do I find out my level of toxicity?”

A. This is established by the nature and extent of your physical symptoms, a health questionnaire and a digestion in questionnaire. Most importantly is how to detox. This is something that I can help you with, and is the most important factor in establishing overall good health - physical, mental and emotional well being.

Q. “What is the best time of day for me to eat my biggest meal?”

A. Establishing eating patterns is key to a robust state of health. For example your main meal should be between 12-2. Ideally, it is best around 12:30, since that is the time of greatest digestive vibrancy.

Q. “When is the best time to go to bed?”

A. We should retire between 9-10 PM, as the time before midnight provides the body and mind with very profound restorative rest.

Q. “What can I do for fatigue?”

A. Fatigue is based on many factors. Not the least of which is the body's toxic load, ("Ama"). Also, we must consider diet, routine and lifestyle factors. It's important to note that most of the solutions to the problems and issues mentioned do not involve medications, and in fact only involve a minimum amount of herbal intervention. Hence there are no side effects.

Q. “Does Ayurveda have any side effects?”

A. Not at all! Unlike conventional medicine we are not giving patients treatments the side effects are creating additional problems.

Q. “What is Maharishi AyurVeda?”

A. Ayurveda has been around for thousands of years, but has through the lapse of time become diluted and fragmented. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was a renowned Vedic Scholar, who took decades to put together the complete and authentic Ayurveda. Since doing so, there has been a resurgence of Ayurvedic doctors and health care facilities around the world.

Q. “Does following Ayurvedic principles cost a lot of money?”

A. Not at all. Ayurveda works with the principles of how Nature functions: so most of it is knowledge for prevention. Without this basic knowledge, we all make mistakes in diet, routine and lifestyle choices. So Ayurveda has cost effective steps to take care of many modern diseases.

Q. “What does "Dosha" mean?”

A. Dosha is a Sanskrit word describing properties that are found in Nature, and therefore also of course within our human physiology. There are three doshas. They are tendencies found in the rhythms of the day and seasons, in climatic conditions, etc. They are also found in the food we eat, and pretty much everything we do or ingest can be classified in these three categories. We have all three doshas operating in our body/mind systems and knowing our body type assists in preventing common health issues.

Q. “What does "Ama" mean?”

A. Ama is a Sanskrit word for toxin. Ama is found in our body, and is the basis of every disease type. It is created from various sources: poor diet, exposing ourselves to pollutants, improperly digested food, etc. Perfect health requires that there is no ama in the system.
